TORRENCE STEPS UP, QUALIFIES EIGHTH FOR LAS VEGAS RACE

Steve Torrence and the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel team continued their impressive performances Saturday as qualifying concluded for Sunday’s Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Torrence took his quickest rides in the three-race-old dragster en route to his best qualifying performance.  His 3.856-second 1,000-foot run at 317.49 mph solidified his eighth-place starting slot – and the team’s best starting position.  His first-round foe is David Grubnic (No. 9, 3.863 at 313.22 mph). 

With crew chief Richard Hogan dialing in the tune-up, Torrence put together strong runs of 3.928 and 3.868 seconds and a 4.559 lap that had problems. 

“We’ve had another good weekend,” Torrence commented.  “The car was really hauling on that (4.559) run when the throttle cable broke.  We’ve made 14 full passes on the car and so far everything is going well.   The car is responding to the changes Richard has been making.”

This is the first time the Torrence Racing dragster qualified in the top half of the 16-car lineup.  He was 13th at Dallas and Phoenix.  He was a semifinalist two weeks ago at Phoenix.

“We’re looking forward to Sunday,” said Torrence.  “Everything really has been coming along well.  We want that to continue.”
