TORRENCE TAKES ON MORGAN LUCAS IN FIRST ROUND AT LAS VEGAS

October 27, 2012 -- A not-so-funny thing happened to Steve Torrence Saturday on his final qualifying run for Sunday’s Big O Tires Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The engine’s blower belt came off as the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster approached the end of the 1,000-foot lap and slowed the momentum while adding unneeded fractions of seconds to his time.

Despite that, the 3.823-second run at 317.94 mph still put him into the top half of the starting field at No. 8. He squares off against Morgan Lucas (No. 9, 3.835 at 317.79 mph) in the opening round.

“There isn’t anything you can do when the blower belt comes off,” said Torrence.  “I’m glad it happened then instead of in the first round on Sunday.”

Crew chief Richard Hogan dialed in consistent times – all in the 3.8 range – during qualifying.

“We are looking forward to the race,” Torrence added.  “We ran well here at the first race this year (when he went to the semifinals), so we will be ready on Sunday.  We want win and move up in the standings.  We don’t have much time left because there’s only one more race remaining.”
