EIGHTH PLACE ON LINE FOR TORRENCE IN FIRST ROUND AT POMONA

November 10, 2012 -- Steve Torrence was among the drivers Saturday who took advantage of cool, sunny Southern California weather that produced excellent elapsed times for Sunday’s Auto Club Finals on the storied Pomona race track.

His 1,000-foot time of 3.795 seconds at 323.89 mph was second-quickest of the Top Fuel session and put the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster into the eighth starting spot against Bob Vandergriff.  Eighth place in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will also be on the line.

“There will be a lot of decisions made Sunday, including who finishes eighth,” said Torrence, who holds a one-point edge, 2,265-2,264.  Vandergriff qualified ninth, 3,797 at 324.28.

“We have a good tune-up for this race,” he continued, “and we want to hold on to eighth place.”

The good track conditions also produced oil-downs that pushed the final session into cooler night conditions that dropped the track temperature.

“We were sitting in the staging lanes for a while waiting to run and the conditions changed,” Torrence commented.   “When we did get to run, the tires broke loose and I shut it off.

“We will be ready to go Sunday morning.”
