TORRENCE QUALIFIES 9TH FOR WINTERNATIONALS AS RAINS WIPES OUT LAST RUN

February 11, 2012 -- In the first two days of qualifying for Sunday’s NHRA’s Winternationals, the weather was picture perfect, but it definitely took on more of a winter atmosphere on Saturday with rain and colder temperatures.  A lot of rain later in the day eventually washed out the final round of qualifying at Pomona Raceway.

It was a run Steve Torrence hoped to make to improve his Top Fuel starting position.

“We wanted to get that last hit (on the throttle) to try and improve our performance,” he said.  “We planned to run a lot harder and try to move into the top half of the field.  We wound up ninth and won’t have lane choice in the first round.”

He registered his quickest 1,000-foot time in the day’s opening session, 3.850 seconds at 314.17 mph, and it put him against Shawn Langdon (No. 8, 3.841 at 318.84) in the opening match.

“The car hasn’t been running as well as we wanted, but our Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. team will make every effort to get it to the final round.  We are excited and we want like to start the season with a bang.”
