CONSISTENT STEVE TORRENCE TO START 6TH IN GATORNATIONALS

GainesvilleMarch 10, 2012 -- Steve Torrence made the most of three consistent qualifying attempts – including his final run Saturday afternoon at Auto Plus Raceway at Gainesville – to earn the sixth Top Fuel starting slot for Sunday’s Tire Kingdom Gatornationals.

Torrence improved his elapsed times on all but one try when tire spin caused him to abort the run.  His best trip down the 1,000-foot asphalt was 3.825 seconds at 316.01 mph in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster.  It put him against Bob Vandergriff Jr. (No. 11, 3.852 at 320.20 mph) in the opening round of eliminations.

“That last was a really good run,” said Torrence.  “We should be able to pick up the pace on Sunday.  The conditions have been good and they could be better then because we’ll be starting an hour earlier (due to the daylight savings time adjustment) and it may be cooler than it was (Saturday).”

Torrence opened Friday’s qualifying with times of 3.875 and 3.835 seconds.

“We’re very happy with the way the car is running,” he added.  “We want to go some rounds.”
