TORRENCE OPENS GAINESVILLE QUALIFYING IN THIRD PLACE

March 9, 2012 -- Another outstanding qualifying performance has thrust Steve Torrence into the upper echelon of NHRA Top Fuel racing early in the new season, and it’s a destination he’d like to hold throughout the 23-race Full Throttle Series.

Torrence drove the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster into third place in Friday’s opening round of the Tire Kingdom Gatornationals at Auto Plus Raceway in Gainesville with a 3.835-second, 320.20 mph 1,000-foot effort on his second attempt.  He was third after the first day – and started the race there – three weeks ago at Phoenix.

“Number 3 is good,” said a smiling Torrence.  “We had a pretty good race car (Friday) and we got off to a good start with a 3.875 (second time) that put us into third place.  Our goal was to stand on (the throttle) and see if we could improve our time . . . and we did.

“We’re excited to see these times coming.  Richard Hogan, our crew chief, and the guys have been doing an excellent job.  We want to keep getting better and better every day.”

Two more opportunities await on Saturday to set the field for Sunday’s eliminations.
