TORRENCE STARTS SECOND AT HOUSTON AS HE GOES AFTER FIRST TF WIN

April 28, 2012 -- Steve Torrence continued his impressive Top Fuel qualifying performance on a warm Saturday afternoon at Royal Purple Raceway.

By doing so, he kept a firm grip on the number two starting slot for Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals.  His 3.772-second, 322.88-mph 1,000-foot run from Friday night was unchallenged, and he also finished the day with two more strong laps that send him into eliminations as a solid contender for his first NHRA race victory.

“This has been awesome weekend for the Torrence Racing/Capco Racing team,” he commented, “especially because we’ve been able to run well before a lot of good friends and people here who have supported us throughout our racing career.

“We tied the track’s elapsed time record with our 3.772- run, and that made a bold statement for our team.”

Torrence registered the second-quickest time on the day’s first run – 3.854 at 315.86 – and concluded it with a 3.914 at 317.34.  Crew chief Richard Hogan was able to experiment with tune-up settings as he prepared for race day.

Torrence squares off against T.J. Zizzo (No. 15, 3.999 at 295.08) in the opening round.

This is the first time he’s started in second place – albeit coming with the same time as top qualifier Morgan Lucas (ties are decided by fastest speed) – and it comes two weeks after he earned his first number one at Charlotte.  He also started third at Phoenix in the season’s second event.

“We would like to have  our pictures taken in the winner’s circle,” added Torrence.
