STELLAR EFFORT PUTS TORRENCE IN NO. 2 STARTING SLOT AT ATLANTA

May 5, 2012 -- Another strong qualifying performance from Steve Torrence Saturday at Atlanta Dragway secured the second Top Fuel starting position for Sunday’s  Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Commerce, Ga.

He didn’t better his quickest Friday elapsed time of 3.827 seconds at 314.17 mph, but he did put the finishing touches on a very consistent qualifying effort in the Georgia heat and humidity.  The Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster stopped the timers at 3.884 and 3.874 seconds.

The first time was second-quickest of the session and earned two qualifying bonus points, but the last was quickest of the session and brought an additional three points.

“Richard Hogan, our crew chief, did very good job getting us in those positions,” said a happy Torrence.  “Overall, we picked up seven extra points (two from Friday night) . . . and every one counts.  We have been trying to take our performance level up a bit and Richard did it here in the hot weather.”

Torrence’s first-round foe is J.R. Todd (No. 15, 3.947 at 311.34).

This is the team’s 10th race – and seventh of the year – since Torrence and Hogan began assembling the members a year ago.  They have been to the semifinals at two of the last three races while seeking their first victory.

“Our time will come,” Torrence said, “when the circumstances are right.”
