TORRENCE VS. VANDERGRIFF IN SUPERNATIONALS OPENER

June 2, 2012 -- The sun came out Saturday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park and slowed the record-setting elapsed times from Friday night’s opening round of qualifying for Sunday’s Toyota SuperNationals.

Although Steve Torrence didn’t improve his blistering run of 3.759 seconds at 324.20 mph under the lights, the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster was still cranking out good numbers.

“We were working on our race day setup,” he said.  “We spun the tires on our first run (6.991 seconds) but crew chief Richard Hogan made some changes and we came back and ran 3.785 seconds.  That was the quickest time of the session.”

He starts fifth and races Bob Vandergriff (12th, 3.828 at 320.89) for the third time in nine starts.

“It seems like we’ve raced him more than three times this year,” Torrence commented.  “We have to be ready Sunday.  He’s a good driver and his car is capable of running good times.”
