STEVE TORRENCE FOURTH QUICKEST ON OPENING DAY OF ROUTE 66 NATIONALS

June 29, 2012 -- Neither rain nor wind on Friday could keep Steve Torrence from recording the fourth-quickest Top Fuel qualifying time in the opening round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

Thunder storms did cause some delays on an otherwise hot and muggy afternoon and evening.

“We were happy to get the qualifying session in,” said Torrence, who drove the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster to its best 1,000-foot time of 3.795 seconds at 317.42 mph.  “And we were happy we ran in the 3.70s again.

“We had rain in the morning and again in the afternoon, but the track was in good condition.  The top four drivers all ran in the 3.70s.”

He began the day with a lap of 3.840 seconds at 314.90 mph.

Antron Brown (3.773), Shawn Langdon (3.784) and Spencer Massey (3.788) are the drivers ahead of Torrence going into Saturday’s final two qualifying runs.
