MASSEY OUTRUNS STEVE TORRENCE IN OPENING ROUND OF FALL NATIONALS

September 23, 2012 -- Steve Torrence ran his second-quickest elapsed time of the weekend in Sunday’s first round of the AAA Texas Fall Nationals only to see fellow Texan Spencer Massey pull away to the victory.

Both drivers left the starting line about the same time, but Massey used what then was the weekend’s quickest 1,000-foot Top Fuel time – 3.814 seconds at 322.11 mph – to outrun the 3.852 at 318.17 from the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster.

The setback in the second of NHRA’s Countdown to the Championship playoff races also was a blow to Torrence’s title aspirations.

“We lost a good race,” he commented, “and it definitely hurt us in Countdown points.  There are four races to go.  We need to regroup in a hurry because we’re going to be racing in St. Louis next week.”

Torrence leaves Texas in eighth place with 2,126 points.

Massey, meanwhile, was the race runner-up and moved into a tie for the series lead with Antron Brown at 2,256 points.
