TORRENCE NO. 8 AS QUALIFYING BEGINS FOR MIDWEST NATIONALS
September 28, 2012 -- Steve Torrence got acquainted with the Gateway Motorsports Park racing surface Friday and came away with the eighth-quickest qualifying run as the inaugural AAA Midwest Nationals – the third of six Countdown to the Championship playoff events – signaled the return of NHRA racing to the St. Louis area after a one-year absence.
He drove the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster to a 1,000-foot time of 3.840 seconds at 318.92 mph on his first pass. He slowed to a 3.977 at 294.31 on the second trip.
“We made a nice run on our first qualifying lap,” said Torrence. “That was important because now we are guaranteed a starting position for Sunday’s race. “We know we can run better . . . and we will be out there on Saturday trying to move into the top four or five qualifying spots (for Sunday’s eliminations).”
