TORRENCE MEETS VANDERGRIFF IN MIDWEST NATIONALS OPENING ROUND

September 29, 2012 -- Steve Torrence will be on a mission Sunday in the AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals.

“We really need to start this race with a round win,” he said following Saturday’s last two qualifying laps.  “We didn’t get it done in the first two Countdown to the Championship races.

“We’ll take what we learned during qualifying and put it to good use on Sunday.”

Torrence qualified the Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster in the eighth slot with a best of 3.840 seconds at 318.92 mph.  Although his time was equaled by Bob Vandergriff and Larry Dixon, Torrence got the better position because he had a faster speed.

So Torrence will line up against Vandergriff – who ran 318.77 mph – for the sixth time this year when racing gets underway.

“We were on a good lap on our first run Saturday, but the engine dropped a cylinder just before the finish line,” Torrence reported.  It stopped the clock in 3.844 seconds at 295.34 mph, and he finished qualifying with a 3.853 at 311.20.
