STEVE TORRENCE FOCUSING ON SOMETHING DIFFERENT: FOUR-WIDE RACING

April 17, 2013 -- It is one of a few radical deviations from the way Wally Parks envisioned drag racing in 1951 when he founded the National Hot Association.  This weekend’s fourth annual Dollar General Four-Wide Nationals is solid proof the fans, and drivers like Steve Torrence, have embraced Bruton Smith’s bold idea of four cars racing side-by-side.

“I like to race at Charlotte and this one is always fun,” said Steve Torrence as he prepared for the April 19-21 showdown at zMAX Dragway.  “I enjoy it because it is much different than usual when you are racing two more drivers.  I definitely have to be on my game at the starting line.  It requires a lot more focus and concentration on the lights.”

Torrence earned his first Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier award at last year’s Four-Wide and then proceeded to drive the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster into the second of three elimination rounds.

“We want to do well this weekend,” he added.  “Our car has been running well and I have been practicing to improve my starting-line reactions.”

This race is the first of three successive Mello Yello Series events.  Following are stops at Houston (April 26-28) and Atlanta (May 3-5), where he secured his first of three 2012 Top Fuel race victories.

“I like the back-to-back races because it gives me more seat time week in and week out . . . and that is good,” commented Torrence.   “That also gives me more confidence in the car.”

Torrence to host this week’s NHRA Now weekly Web series

Steve Torrence will preview the Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals fueled by Full Throttle at Charlotte’s zMAX Dragway.

NHRA Now is a weekly Web series on U-Tube that gives fans an inside look at the lives of the drivers and teams of the NHRA and keeps everyone up to date on the latest happenings on and off the track, all season long.

“I had a blast doing it,” Torrence said, “and I look forward to working with them more and doing it again.”
