TORRENCE GETS QUARTERFINALS FINISH AT KANSAS NATIONALS

Burn OutMay 19, 2013 -- A determined Steve Torrence left David Grubnic at the starting line Sunday and never looked back en route to his first-round victory in the Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

His Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster crossed the finish line in 3.891 seconds at 308.07 mph.  Grubnic’s dragster smoked the tires and he coasted to a 10.094 at 69.28 mph.

“Lee Beard has been working hard on the race car every day,” Torrence said of his new crew chief.  “He has definitely turned things around.”

Torrence was paired against top qualifier Shawn Langdon in the quarterfinals.  The Capco dragster registered its best 1,000-foot run of the event – 3.803 seconds at 321.12 – but it wasn’t enough.  Langdon, who was the eventual race winner, won with a 3.791 at 312.86.

This event ended a string of five consecutive race weekends for the team.  It began April 21 in Charlotte, N.C. and moved to Houston and Atlanta, where rain forced a one-week delay to complete eliminations May 11.  From there, it was off to Topeka.

After a much-needed week off, the next journey is to Englishtown, N.J., May 31-June 2, for the Toyota Summernationals.  Torrence won his second Top Fuel title last year at the iconic race track.

"This comes at a very good time for us," said Torrence.  "Lee has more time to work on getting us back in the winner's circle."
