May 31, 2013 -- Steve Torrence was smiling Friday after his two qualifying runs for Sunday’s 44th annual Toyota NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, N.J.

His Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster is seventh in the provisional line-up, thanks to a stellar first lap of 3.866 seconds at 314.83 mph.  That was third-quickest of the session as the team moved into the second race with new crew chief Lee Beard.

The crafty tuner made some tune-up changes on the second run and the tires began to spin early so Torrence aborted the effort.  That did not dampen his enthusiasm.

“I am super-excited!” he said.  “The car is definitely going in the right direction.  We just need to make some more laps and we’ll be where we want to be. I am happy with the results so far.”

They have two more qualifying runs coming up on Saturday.
