TRACTION TROUBLE HAMPERS STEVE TORRENCE AT EPPING

June 23, 2013 --Steve Torrence had to battle Clay Millican and an unpredictable New England Dragway racing surface in Sunday’s opening round of the first New England Nationals and, at the end of the 1,000-foot track, Millican crossed the finish line first.

Torrence and Millican each experienced traction trouble on the run, but Millican was able to regain momentum and cross the line in 4.042 seconds at 291.32 mph to Torrence’s 4.612 at 272.50 in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster.

The setback also terminated Torrence’s streak of four consecutive round wins that came last Sunday with his victory at Bristol, TN.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Torrence.  “We really wanted to maintain that competitive level we had last week.  We don’t have any time to sit around.  We are going to hit it hard in the next four days, go to the next race in Joliet (near Chicago) and get back to winning rounds.”

He dropped to 10th in Mello Yello Drag Racing standings with 496 points.  He now trails Bob Vandergriff (9th)  by six and Millican by 29.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals begins June 28 in Joliet, Ill.
