TORRENCE SUFFERS DISAPPOINTING LOSS AT DENVER

BurnoutJuly 21, 2013 -- By the time Steve Torrence could say “up in smoke” Sunday morning, his opportunity to capitalize on a top-qualifying position was just that in the opening round of the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver.

Although Torrence was in and out of the throttle and did get the tires on the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster to hook up again, the damage had been done. Mike Strasburg got the win light in 4.062 seconds at 281.13 mph and Torrence followed at 4.114, 268.81.

“Well . . .” said Torrence, “we certainly didn’t expect that.  It was running well until about half-track when the tires broke loose.  I tried to catch it but we ran out of track.  That really hurt us in Mello Yello Series points.  It was very disappointing.

“We will learn from that and move on to Seattle to see if we can win another race there.”

He is the defending champion in the 26th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals, Aug. 2-4 at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.

Torrence kept his hold on 10th place in Mello Yello Series standings.  He has 647 points.
