TORRENCE BEGINS ACTION AT SONOMA FROM NO. 2 POSITION

July 27, 2013 -- Steve Torrence only made two full 1,000-foot runs during the two days of qualifying for Sunday’s Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway, but he squeezed out all the performance he could on the way to maintaining his hold on second place.

His 3.766-second lap Friday at 323.37 mph was not challenged Saturday, although his first run of 3.810 at 322.73 was one of the quickest of the day.

“We have a good race car,” commented Torrence.  “We ran well in qualifying and we just missed the top spot by one-thousandth of a second. We couldn’t improve our time, but there’s nothing wrong with second place.  We started No. 1 last Sunday at Denver.

“Lee (Beard, crew chief) has our car running well.  I am looking forward to Sunday.”

Torrence races Tommy Johnson Jr. (No. 15, 3.875 at 303.71) in the first round.
