STEVE TORRENCE REACHES QUARTERFINALS AT NORWALK

Career Best RunJuly 7, 2013 --The string of four successive NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series races came to a close Sunday, two rounds too soon for Steve Torrence.

Torrence, who won the first event at Bristol, TN June 16, used his finest lap of the weekend –3.794 seconds at a career-best 327.25 mph – to defeat Terry McMillan’s 3.873 at 321.81 mph in the opening round.

In second-round action against Clay Millican, traction trouble slowed the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster to 4.146 seconds at 270.32 mph and Torrence watched Millican turn on the win light in 3.802 to 324.90.

“That wasn’t the outcome we wanted,” said Torrence, “but we did have one good run.  We needed to run quicker the last time because we knew what kind of numbers Clay would run.

“The track just couldn’t hold the combination Lee (Beard, crew chief) had.  The tires began spinning before half-track.  We’re getting closer every race and we will keep working on it.”

He stayed 10th in series points with 605.

The team gets a welcomed week off before starting the traditional three-week Western Swing: Denver (July 19-21), Sonoma, Calif. (26-28), Seattle (Aug. 2-4).
