TIRE SMOKE HAMPERS BILLY TORRENCE AT CHARLOTTE

September 15, 2013 -- Some days are better than others at the race track, and Sunday’s eliminations at zMAX Dragway belong in Billy Torrence’s “others” category.

In the first round of the Carlyle Tools Carolina Nationals – the opening event of NHRA’s Countdown to the Championship series – Torrence’s Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster was a victim of tire smoke when he hit the throttle.

All he could do was watch rival Clay Millican pull away despite some smoke of his own.  Millican reached the finish line in 4.288 seconds at 249.16 mph to Torrence’s 6.383 at 101.20.

“That is just one of the things you hope don’t happen to you at the starting line,” Torrence commented.  “We ran well in qualifying.

“The crew was looking to find what caused it. We will be ready for the next race.  That is an important one for us,” continued Torrence, who lives in Kilgore, Texas.  “That race is in Dallas, one of our two home-town races.”
