STEVE TORRENCE MEETS SCHUMACHER FIRST ROUND

September 21, 2013 -- Rain kept everyone off the Texas Motorplex race track on Friday but, all that did was give the crew chiefs one more day to figure out combinations for the track’s renowned concrete surface.

Steve Torrence began Saturday’s qualifying at his home track with a 3.832-second lap at 320.03 mph that placed him fourth on the starting list for Sunday’s AAA Texas Fall Nationals.  It is the third of six Countdown to the Championship races in the NHRA Mello Yello NHRA Series.

“It felt good to put up a good number,” said Torrence.  “That was our plan because, thanks to the rain, we only had two opportunities so we needed to take advantage of them.  We really want to get a win at home.

“It will be a good round of racing for all the Countdown drivers.  All of us want to win early and do that three more times. 

“We race Tony Schumacher (9th, 3.878 at 320.20) in the first round. We look forward to it.  We are ready to go.”
