NO FATHERS’ DAY VICTORY FOR TORRENCE
CAPCO Driver’s Frustration Continues at Bristol

June 21, 2015 -- The long season of discontent continued for Texan Steve Torrence and the Capco Contractors Top Fuel drag racing team Sunday in the 15th renewal of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

First day qualifying problems led to the loss of the lane choice option for a first round match with former Pro Stock star Dave Connolly and Torrence’s bid to compensate for the disadvantage resulted in a rare foul start.

It wasn’t at all how the 32-year-old former Top Alcohol Dragster World Champion (2005) had planned to celebrate Fathers’ Day, especially in an event he won in such impressive fashion just two years ago.  Nevertheless, it sends him into the latest break in the schedule in 11th place in Mello Yello driver points with just seven races remaining before the field is set for the playoffs.

While he insists that over the course of a season the good breaks and the bad ones usually offset, he admitted Sunday that he’s looking at a big deficit so far this year.

“I know it’ll swing back our way eventually,” said the cancer survivor and four-time Top Fuel winner, “but, yeah, it’s frustrating.  It’s frustrating for me.  It’s frustrating for my dad and it’s really frustrating for the guys.  They’ve been working their butts off.  All you can do is just go back to work and go on to the next race.”

That next race is the ninth annual Summit Racing Equipment Nationals, July 4th weekend, at Norwalk, Ohio.  It marks the start of another difficult stretch of five races in six weeks culminating in the rigorous Western Swing that historically has separated the pretenders from the contenders in the battle for slots in the Countdown to the Championship.
