TORRENCE GETS THIRD NO. 1 OF THE SEASON
Texan Leads Top Fuel Qualifiers at Nhra 4wide Nationals

April 23, 2016 -- Texan Steve Torrence will start his Capco Contractors/Rio Ammunition Top Fuel dragster from the No. 1 position for the third time in five races Sunday after another stellar qualifying performance, this one in advance of the seventh annual NHRA 4Wide Nationals presented by Lowe’s Foods at zMAX Dragway.

The collaboration between Torrence, crew chief Richard Hogan and tuning consultant Alan Johnson produced a 1,000 foot time of 3.736 seconds at 326.48 miles per hour on Friday that withstood several Saturday challenges.  Torrence will face fellow Texan Terry Haddock in Sunday’s initial round in an event in which he was runner-up to reigning World Champion Antron Brown one year ago.

It was Torrence’s second No. 1 in the 4Wide, his fourth in the last 10 races and his eighth since turning pro.  He also started from No. 1 at zMAX in 2012, his first year as an owner/driver.

“We’ve had a really good car all season long but we’ve had three first round losses in a row and sort of stumped our toe,” Torrence said.  “The same thing happened in Las Vegas.  We had an awesome car in qualifying, (but) the track conditions changed and it bit us in the first round.  So we’re staying cautiously optimistic.  Race day’s a whole different deal.

“This new Morgan Lucas Racing chassis has been unbelievable.   It’s gone straight down the track on all but two runs this year (and) that gives you a lot of confidence as well as something you can build on for the weekend.”
